This book collects the most relevant manifestations of the man-animal legal relationship from ancient times to contemporary times, while analyzing the role that law has played in this unequal bond. The text recreates, among other issues, the mixture of cruelty and fun typical of the treatment given to animals during the Roman Empire, their legal legacy, the judgment to which they were subjected throughout the Middle Ages (strangely respectful of rights and guarantees). procedural), the protectionist norms of the 18th and 19th centuries, the paradigmatic Nazi animal legislation, and the beginnings of animal legal defense.
The author also examines the main theories related to animal rights, the innovative proposals that defend the development of their capacities and their status as co-citizens, and closes with an analysis of the regulatory evolution of protection, including the jurisprudential debate that promises new legal conditions for the treatment of sentient beings in Colombia.
